LOCTITE 495 is a low viscosity ethyl cyanoacrylate instant adhesive designed for fast bonding of plastics, rubbers and metals.
It is a single component, transparent colorless to light straw colored liquid that requires no mixing before use.
The adhesive cures rapidly in the presence of atmospheric moisture, developing handling strength within seconds.
It has a specific gravity of approximately 1.1 and viscosity between 20 and 60 mPa·s at 25°C, providing very fast fixture times on substrates including steel, aluminum, ABS, PVC and elastomers.
It achieves full chemical resistance after 24 hours, making it suitable for general purpose industrial bonding applications.
LOCTITE 495 is a one part ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive formulated for general purpose instant bonding applications. The uncured material is a transparent, colorless to light straw colored liquid with low viscosity and does not require mixing before use. Polymerization begins when the adhesive is exposed to atmospheric humidity and confined between closely fitting surfaces. Functional strength develops rapidly, while complete chemical resistance and solvent resistance continues to build for up to 24 hours at 22°C. The product has been qualified under Commercial Item Description A-A-3097 in certain regions.
At 25°C, the specific gravity is approximately 1.1. Viscosity (20 to 45 mPa·s cone and plate / 20 to 60 mPa·s Brookfield) ensures fast curing performance. Cure speed depends on substrate type, bond gap and ambient humidity. Typical fixture time at 22°C and 50% relative humidity is 5 to 10 seconds on mild steel, less than 5 seconds on aluminum, neoprene, nitrile rubber, ABS, PVC and phenolic, and 10 to 15 seconds on polycarbonate. Thin bond lines increase instant adhesive curing speed, while larger gaps slow curing. Optimal curing occurs at 40%–60% relative humidity. Activators may be used to accelerate curing in larger gaps.
After 24 hours cure, lap shear strength (ISO 4587) is approximately 14.2 N/mm² on grit blasted steel, 10.8 N/mm² on aluminum, 7.9 N/mm² on ABS, 8.7 N/mm² on PVC, and 8 N/mm² on polycarbonate. Block shear strength and tensile strength on Buna-N rubber (13.7 N/mm²) demonstrate strong bonding performance. Peel strength on steel is generally below 0.5 N/mm. After only 10 seconds, tensile strength can reach 6.0 N/mm², showing very fast strength development.
Environmental resistance testing shows strength retention after exposure to motor oil, gasoline, isopropanol and ethanol. Under high humidity (98% RH at 40°C), strength gradually decreases over time. Water and water/glycol resistance depends on exposure duration. Heat aging and elevated temperature performance show gradual strength reduction as temperature increases.
For best results, surfaces must be clean, dry and grease free before application. A primer for low surface energy plastics may be used when required. Activator application can accelerate curing but should not be applied over primed areas. Full service loads should be applied after complete cure (24–72 hours).
Store in original unopened container at 2°C to 8°C storage temperature in a dry location. Not recommended for oxygen rich systems or use with strong oxidizing agents. Technical data represent typical industrial adhesive values for reference purposes.
